What Is Infertility?
Infertility is a condition of the reproductive system that prevents the conception of children. A diagnosis of infertility is usually given to a couple that has been trying to conceive for at least one year without any success.
Infertility can be caused by a number of factors, including the production of healthy sperm, healthy eggs, blocked fallopian tubes, the sperm not being able to fertilize an egg, the fertilized egg not being able to become implanted in the uterus, and sufficient embryo quality.
It can be a common assumption that infertility is related to the woman but only about one-third of cases are related to the woman alone. One-third is also related to the man and the other third is a combination involving both or an unknown cause. Unknown causes can account for about 20% of cases.
Infertility is diagnosed after a physical examination of both partners and different tests, such as a semen analysis for men and ultrasounds of the fallopian tubes and uterus for women.
